The Mentor Police Department is responsible for making sure elementary school children walk safely to and from school. Currently the department employs eight school crossing guards with this responsibility. The guards are posted at the following elementary schools: Garfield Elementary, Orchard Hollow Elementary, Rice Elementary, Sterling Morton Elementary, and St. Mary’s School.
The Crime Prevention Unit oversees the school crossing guards, and coordinates the scheduling and training, as well as making sure the guards are properly equipped. Constant communication is maintained for working hours and substitutions. Training sessions are held yearly to prepare guards for their assignments. Many of our guards are long time employees, and make the safety of our school children their number one priority.
