Data obtained for our statistical page was taken from our reporting system and the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) program, which collects information about crimes reported to the police. Currently under the FBI’s system, law enforcement authorities aggregate the number of incidents by offense type and report these totals to them monthly. The UCR program collects offense information on the eight Part I crimes of homicide, forcible rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft, and arson. It also provides limited information about offenses, victims and offenders, and includes reported arrests for 21 additional crime categories. Although participation in this program is voluntary, we provide the FBI with the City of Mentor’s statistics as required by the program. While we do not report motor vehicle accidents and traffic enforcement data to the FBI, we collect these figures for our departmental monthly reports as well as other agencies’ requests for this information. Today, several annual comprehensive statistical publications are produced from data provided by us and nearly 17,000 other law enforcement agencies across the United States.
