The Chief of Police of the City of Mentor is responsible for professional and administrative work in planning, organizing, and directing all activities of the Mentor Police Department. The Chief works directly under the administrative direction of the City Manager / Safety Director, and along with the other city department heads, is intimately involved in the operation of the City of Mentor.
The Chief is at the head of the organizational chart, and has three division captains reporting directly to him. However, he also has direct supervision over several functions of the department. Internal affairs investigates serious complaints against departmental employees and reports to him. Victim’s Assistance and the Police Chaplains are also under his direct control.
Chief Daniel W. Llewellyn has been a member of the Mentor Police Department since 1979. During his employment, he has been a patrol officer, detective, patrol sergeant, officer in charge of the detective bureau, patrol lieutenant, and captain in charge of operations. He served on the SWAT team for over 20 years. Chief Llewellyn has a Bachelor of Arts in Police Administration from Lake Erie College in Painesville and a Masters of Science Degree in Administration of Justice from Mercyhurst College in Erie, Pennsylvania. He is also a graduate of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s National Academy.
