CoEd Recreational Volleyball

Discover Rock Climbing

Looking for some vertical adventure or an enthralling full body work out? If so, then rock climbing is for you! This course, taught at the Cleveland Rock Gym (CRG), is designed to teach new climbers the basic safety and techniques used in rock climbing. This four week course includes: an introductory climbing session, a belay class, a technique class, and a final climbing session for you to practice your new skills. CRG’s experienced staff will instruct and supervise all climbing sessions, but feel free to stay after class each week to practice your new skills! All equipment is included and no experience is necessary.
Fencing

Zorro won’t hold a candle to you after you learn the fundamentals of modern foil fencing in this new class. Instruction includes stretching, footwork, lunges, attack, parry-riposte, strategy, tactics and bouting. Fun and safety are emphasized while developing hand-eye coordination, agility, dexterity and stamina as well as social skills and manners. All equipment is provided, so come out and try something new.
Hatha Yoga

The ancient practice of yoga is an integrated approach to health and well being. Through guided yoga postures, breathing techniques, relaxation, and meditation, you will experience increased energy within a relaxed body and quiet mind. Come experience the effects of bringing body, mind, and spirit into harmony. All levels of yoga are welcome. Patty McPhillips is a certified yoga therapist and student of yoga for over 25 years. Bring a mat and a small pillow or blanket. Do not eat for 2 hours prior to class.

Pilates

You will build strength in your core muscles during this challenging class. Many exercises will focus on your abs, back, and hips. Health benefits of Pilates include: improved core stability, posture, balance, flexibility, and prevention and treatment of back pain. An exercise mat and light hand weights (3 lb. weights are best).
Running Class
All Ages
Have you always wanted to train for and run a road race – a 5K, 10K, or half marathon? This running class with experienced marathon runner Kate Pophal of Perfect Pace Running, will help you train for any race and be prepared for the Rite Aid Half or 10K races on May 20 or the 5K race on May 19 in Cleveland. Enjoy the comarderie of running with others in training and learn all of the tricks and preparations you’ll need to be successful. You’ll meet at Achilles Running Shop, 7439 Mentor Ave, and set out for a solid run each week. Participants should wear running clothes and running shoes and dress in layers for the weather. Each participant will get a shirt, hat or gloves, too! Class is appropriate for anyone serious about training for a race. Kate Pophal specializes in training beginner and veteran runners for races from the 5k to the Boston Marathon qualifiers. Pophal coached at Xavier University and is a certified personal trainer.
Stress Relief Workout

Stressful days? Take time to re-energize yourself. This class is ideal for all ages and fitness levels, especially for those who want the benefits of exercise without the gym atmosphere. No mirrors, drill sergeants, no pressure! Each class provides the mix needed to improve cardiovascular endurance, strengthen muscles, burn fat and relax. The first 30 minutes includes simple low-impact aerobics to bring your heart rate up to a safe level. Weight bearing exercises, stretching, controlled breathing and relaxation complete the class. Please bring light weights, a mat and water bottle. Wear loose, comfortable clothing and tennis shoes.

Do you Zumba? The Zumba exercise craze has hit Mentor! Here’s your chance to learn the newest fitness routine – an intensely fun workout combining cha-cha, salsa, reggae and hip-hop dance moves with a few traditional moves like squats and plies. You’ll burn calories, laugh, dance, and enjoy moving to energetic music. Dance experience is not required, you’ll learn as you go. Class is great for teens and adults. Bring a waterbottle, a towel and wear good exercise shoes.
Mentor in Motion
All Ages
This program is a personal challenge event that encourages all members of our community, from kids to seniors, to get active and 100 miles. And best of all, it’s simple. As a participant in Mentor in Motion, you can walk, run, bike, hike, swim, skate, even golf your way toward completing 100 miles of motion. It’s easier than you think to accomplish. Walk one mile (about 2200 steps) five days a week and you’ll reach 100 miles before you know it. Take the challenge and involve your family members, too. This is a great event for all. Sign up and we’ll send you everything you need to get started including a pedometer to help count your miles. You’ll also get an exercise conversion sheet to help you track your motion across a variety of movements and a personalized record log to set your goals and record your miles, and lots more!

Teen
Come and have fun learning dance with your friends. This class is for teens ages 14 and older and includes a mix of pilates and yoga warm ups, basic ballet center floor work and some jazz and hip hop moves to create just the right combo of exercise and entertainment. Get your friends together and enroll!

By participating in this 10-session class, you’ll gain increased coordination, freedom of movement and exciting self-defense techniques, plus you’ll learn about the history, culture and knowledge parts of the martial arts. Parents are invited to participate in the fun and educational activities of our highly successful karate program by enrolling in the same class as your youngster!
Junior Dragons

Junior Dragons is geared to 5 – 6 year old student to give them the fundamentals of karate through the development of fine motor skills and learning independence. Students will gain greater personal and interpersonal control and awareness as they learn to listen, follow directions, be a team member and control emotions and actions through fun and creative activies. We’ll focus on eight basic skills including balance, control, coordination, discipline, fitness, focus, memory and teamwork. We’ll practice and learn drills and exercises in class so that students can take home what they’ve learned and continue practicing at home. Students may purchase a karate uniform from the instructor on the first day of class.
Lil Dragons
Youth
Lil Dragons focuses on the physical and mental development of the student. This program for ages 3 – 4 differs from other martial arts in one way – its use of skill over technical development makes student stronger in their personal lives. This class prepares them for the future in martial arts and the outside world. There are eight primary skills in the program: balance, control, coordination, discipline, fitness, focus, memory and teamwork. There are many drills and exercises used to practice these skills in class. Students receive stripes after mastering the class skill for that week with testing in the last class for the next belt.
Youth Rock Climbing

During these four week sessions at the Cleveland Rock Gym (CRG), you will develop balance, strength, and climbing techniques while scaling our 30-foot walls. CRG’s experienced staff will supervise all climbing sessions. All equipment is included and no experience is necessary.

Arthritis Association Exercise

This class is designed to help those with joint or muscle problems acheive improved joint mobility, muscle strength and endurance in order to improve the performance of their daily acyivities. Class consists of exercise (stretching, strengthening, and endurance routines), health education, movement activities and relaxation exercises.
Delay the Disease
Delay the Disease is a fitness program designed to empower people with Parkinson’s Disease, by optimizing their physical function and helping delay the progression of symptoms. The classes focus on Parkinson’s specific exercises that help fight the symptom’s of the disease. No equipment or expertise is necessary; just participate at your own level of ability. Caregivers may attend to assist particpant at no charge. If caregivers would like to participate in the class, they may register and pay the class fee.

Pilates (Core Fusion)

Pilates is a conditioning program based on the work of Joseph Pilates, that improves muscle control, flexibility, coordination and strength. Become more aware of your body and learn to use your core. This class consists primarily of floor work. Please bring your own mat.

Stretch & Balance

This 45 minute class will incorprate stretching and balance exercises to increase your flexibility and balance. We will use a rope to stretch all the major muscle groups. Ropes will be provided. Tuesday will be a chair class and Thursday will be a mat class, please bring your own mat.
Tai Chi Seniors

Tai Chi is an especially effective exercise modality for older adults. It is a meditative and energetic form, one of the national treasures of China. This class is in the Wu style of Tai Chi.
Water Exercise at Heisley

This 45 minute water exercise class is designed especially for those 55 and older. The certified instructor provides clear instruction from the pool deck. Class includes a warm up and shallow water exercises including cardio, toning, and strength.
Weight Training

The focus is on work with resistance bands and weights, standing and seated, including mat work on the floor. Designed to build muscle strength and bone density. Bring your own exercise mat and free weights.
Yoga

Yoga is an ancient system of philosophy and practices. The yoga classes are a mixture of gentle stretches combined with traditional yoga postures. The sense of wellness acquired through practice is caused by easing muscle tension, massaging internal organs, and improving flexibility of the joints. The challenge of this practice lies in the coordination of breath with movement, which encourages quieting and relaxing the mind, focus and balance. Please bring a yoga mat and a firm cushion; wear loose or stretchy clothes for yoga classes.
Zumba Gold

Join us for this great new class. The Zumba® program fuses hypnotic Latin rhythms and easy-to-follow moves to create a one-of-a-kind fitness program. The routines feature interval training sessions where fast and slow rhythms and resistance training are combined to tone and sculpt your body while burning fat. Add some Latin flavor and international zest into the mix and you’ve got a Zumba® class! This class tailors the Zumba class to the active older adult. Come check it out.
