The following is a list of classes offered by Mentor Recreation to help develop sport skills.  You’ll find information on local sport organizations and leagues here.

Hummingbird Soccer
Youth
Instructor: Jump Start Sports
Children ages 3 – 6 years old have fun and learn the basics of soccer: dribbling, passing, trapping, shooting, and positioning. Each session consists of instruction in each aspect of the game, participation in fun drills that are designed to teach skills, and low-key, non-competitive simulated games (children are separated by age/skill level for the simulated game portion of the program). Coaches from Jump Start Sports will run the program, but parents are encouraged to assist in the coaching.

Jump Start Lacrosse
Youth Course
Instructor: Jump Start Sports
Lacrosse is action-packed and lots of fun! Learn the fundamentals including passing and catching, fielding ground balls, cradling, spacing and positioning and defense. Players will be divided into gender and age groups to play fun situational scrimmages which will help them learn more and enjoy the fast-paced action of the game.

Jump Start Rugby

Instructor: Jump Start Sports
USA Rugby, Rugby Ohio and Jump Start Sports have joined with Mentor Recreatoin to offer an exciting new program introducing children in grades K – 7 to an exciting old sport! Rugby is fast paced and a blast to play! The game is enjoyed by millions of people all over the world, and it is now an Olympic sport! Rookie Rugby is a non-contact version of the sport that focuses on fun and fundamentals. Experienced coaches will run the program and all equipment will be provided. USA Rugby is a division of the International Rugby Federation and is a member of the US Olympics Committee.

Adult Classes

Learn to Play Pickleball
Adult Course
Pickleball is the fastest growing sport in America! It’s fun for all ages too – think of badmiton, tennis, racquetball and ping-pong rolled into one, played on a tennis court of smaller proportions. Sign up for this introductory class and learn all of the basics on our new, dedicated courts at Civic Center Park. All equipment is provided. You’ll play against other participants in short matches at the end of each class. Wear shorts, t-shirt, tennis shoes, sunscreen and bring a water bottle. Get a flyer here

Try It Thursday – Pickleball!
Adult Course
Come out and try the fastest growing sport in the US – Pickleball! We’ll provide all the equipment, simple instruction and match up participants for quick, fun matches. There’s no fee to try it and no registration necessary, so stop by and join in!

Fencing
Adult & Youth
Instructor: Tom Nagy
Zorro won’t hold a candle to you after you learn the fundamentals of modern foil fencing in this new class. Instruction includes stretching, footwork, lunges, attack, parry-riposte, strategy, tactics and bouting.  Fun and safety are emphasized while developing hand-eye coordination, agility, dexterity and stamina as well as social skills and manners.  All equipment is provided, so come out and try something new.
