Thanks to all who contributed to the success of this premiere event. Yes, it was a little damp! But that did not deter approximately 3,500 people from coming out to spend the day at the beach — playing games, building sandcastles, learning to kayak, and making art. Check out the City of Mentor’s facebook page for photos from the event.
Imagine our mile-long lakefront filled with colorful flying kites, amazing sand sculptures, beach music, strolling performers, kayaking, dancing and tents filled with children’s activities, arts vendors, and food.
This free, family-friendly, outdoor celebration incorporates the arts with the elements of wind, water and sand to create an interactive event on Ohio’s longest natural beach.
Headlands Beach State Park is located at the northern terminus of OH 44-N at Headlands Road.
Activities include kite flying, kite making classes, sand castle building, scavenger hunts, kayaking, sailing and paddle boarding. There will also be a number of beach art projects, face painting.
Experience an interactive theater when you step inside the Mentor Water Safety Trailer, or watch World Champion Sand Sculptor Carl Jara create another masterpiece.
No need to bring a picnic — an array of food choices will be offered for sale.
Arts and craft vendors will line the paved path selling one of a kind beach glass jewelry, driftwood items, wind chimes, sea shell glass jars, beach-themed paintings, pottery, mosaic vases, sandals and beachbags.
In 2013, our kid-friendly activities were provided by Mentor Recreation, Ohio Society for the Elevation of Kites (OSEK), Fine Arts Association, Lake Metroparks, Cleveland Museum of Art, Mentor Public Library, and Doug Smith.
The premier event was presented by the City of Mentor and Headlands Beach State Park with the support from the Ohio Society for the Elevation of Kites, Lake Metroparks, Doug Smith, Fine Arts Association and Mentor Schools’ Art Students.
The generosity of the following sponsors made the event possible: Lake County Visitors Bureau Arts & Culture Grant, Lake Health, STERIS Corporation, Ohio Arts Council, Lake National Bank, Mentor Economic Assistance Corporation, Great Lakes Publishing, The News-Herald and Mentor Patch. The BeachFest logo was created with a small grant received from the Lake County Visitors Bureau.
