Just last year, The Mentor Senior Center celebrated their 50th anniversary. Over the years, the Senior Center has always been a place to meet and make friends, but it is even more so today. They offer many vital programs to their more than 5,000 members and they continue to thrive and have become a necessary part of the community. If you haven’t thought about becoming a member before, here is some information on just some of the first-rate features that you will find at the Mentor Senior Center.
This dynamic 22,000 square foot facility features a library, billiards room, computer room, fitness center with aerobic and strength training equipment, fitness studio offering a variety of fitness classes, arts and crafts room, health services room, meeting rooms, kitchen, main hall with stage, and an inviting lobby and reception area with double-face fireplace.
Senior Center membership is required to participate in all programs, but for those 55 and older, it is the best bargain in town! The cost is just $10 a year for Mentor residents and $15 a year for non-residents. If you have Silver Sneakers included in your Medicare Advantage Plan, you get membership at no cost.
Activities offered at the facility include all levels of exercise classes, games including Bingo, Chess and Duplicate Bridge, ceramics, woodcarving, chair volleyball, ping pong, quilting, painting, weight training, weekly movies, line dancing, support groups, culture groups. There truly is something for everyone.
One of the most popular features of the Mentor Senior Center is their travel program. They return to the road in 2024 with motor coach daytrips to a Guardians game in Detroit, Rivers Casino in Pittsburgh, a Progressive Winery Tour through Dover and West Lafayette, Ohio and many more. You can also register for some of their overnight destinations. This year some of the exciting options are the Ark Encounter and Creation Museum in Kentucky and an overnight stay in a caboose with the opportunity to ride the Oil Creek Railroad.
The Senior Center is open Monday through Friday. One of the best features are their daily made-from-scratch hot lunches which feature some delicious options like chicken marsala or stuffed pork chops. These meals are available weekdays, 11:30 AM – 12:15 PM; however, many members take them to go, and then don’t worry about cooking dinner that day. In fact, the Daily Special is the best $5 deal in town! Homemade soup and sandwiches are also available.
