The City of Mentor will host a ceremony of remembrance on Friday, September 11, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at the Mentor Safety Forces Memorial. Twenty-five years after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, we gather to honor the nearly 3,000 lives lost in New York, at the Pentagon, and aboard Flight 93, and to remember the first responders who ran toward danger that morning. All are invited to stand together in remembrance as we reflect on sacrifice, service, and the spirit of unity that followed that fateful day. When: 8:00 am - 2:00 pm The Lake County Solid Waste District will conduct a special collection of hazardous waste on Saturday, May 30, 2026, and Saturday, September 12, 2026, from 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM at the Lake County Fairgrounds located at 1301 Mentor Avenue. Lake County residents can drop off accepted items including most automotive and household cleaners; lawn, pool and unknown chemicals; lightbulbs and batteries; aerosols, empty propane tanks, kerosene, mercury, paints (oil-based), polyurethanes, primers and grout; roofing tars, shellacs, stains, thinners, turpentine and varnish. Prohibited items include ammunition, explosives, latex paint (dry it & toss it), medical waste, prescription medicines, and smoke alarms (mail to manufacturer). All items will be unloaded from your vehicle by the collections team at the designated drop off point. The third annual Headlands Birding Festival takes place
September 18th-20th and will be bigger than ever with
more walks, expert talks, and longer vendor hours.
A keynote speech as Springbrook Gardenhouse will kickoff
the festival and feature Peter Kaestner, the first person to
record sightings of 10,000 different bird species! General registration to support the festival is $20/person, but
several free events will take place on Saturday and Sunday.
In addition, guided birding walks led by expert birders will
take place across the Mentor Headlands area. There will be a
social activity and gathering on Saturday night. Registration is now open at the newly updated website at
