New service hours aim to help combat senior isolation with more transportation options for seniors and people with disabilities; while also improving job access on weekends

Laketran announced today that its paratransit Dial-a-Ride service will expand to seven days a week beginning Sunday, September 28, 2025. The new Sunday service will operate from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., helping customers, particularly seniors and people with disabilities, get to shopping, religious services, and other social activities.

“Providing access and mobility is at the core of our mission,” said Laketran CEO Ben Capelle. “For years, we have heard from customers that Sunday service is essential to their independence and quality of life. We view this expansion as our commitment to the community and a direct response to their needs.”

In addition, Laketran will extend service hours on Saturdays for both Dial-a-Ride and Local Routes to 6:00 a.m.–9:00 p.m., adding to the significant increase in transit access throughout Lake County.

“The majority of Laketran riders are going to work,” continued Capelle. “And we believe these new hours will help more people have reliable transportation to work weekend shifts or pick up overtime.”

The decision to expand service was strongly supported by customer feedback. In a recent customer survey, 70 percent reported that their lives are restricted on Sundays due to a lack of transportation. Sixty percent of customers indicated that they have no means of transportation on Sundays, while others said they must rely on friends or family. Respondents were most excited about using Sunday service to attend religious services, visit family and friends, shop, and travel to work.

Laketran’s Dial-a-Ride program is the agency’s most notable service, offering door-to-door transportation throughout Lake County for seniors, individuals with disabilities, but is also uniquely offered to the general public. By expanding service to Sundays, Laketran is addressing one of the most consistent service requests and now ensures that residents have reliable access to employment and essential services seven days a week.

Board President Brian Falkowski shared, “This service expansion is a milestone in our ongoing commitment to the people of Lake County. It fulfills long-standing customer requests, ensuring that more residents have reliable access to the transportation they need, but it also strengthens the economic and social vitality of Lake County. By providing service every day of the week, we are helping local businesses, connecting residents to jobs and community resources, and fostering greater independence for those who rely on public transit. This is a meaningful step toward building a more connected, accessible, and thriving community for everyone in our county.”
