The city of Mentor is home to over 300 retailers with some easier to find than others. Tucked away on Center Street, professional carpenters, seasoned mechanics, and casual DIYers, alike flock to DAK Tool and Supply, a charming, family-owned hardware store.

Owned by Dale and Cathy Keiter, DAK Tool and Supply has been in business for over 20 years. The Keiters have been Mentor residents for over three decades, with Dale and his children attending Mentor schools. Four years ago, the family moved their business to a new location on Center Street. DAK’s birthplace was in the Keiter’s 15-square foot dining room following an injury that forced Dale to pursue a new career. The operation quickly expanded into a bustling business with over 5,000 square feet of shopping space.

“I never thought it would get this big. Never in a million years did we think this would happen,” exclaimed Cathy Keiter.

When you step through the door at DAK Tool and Supply, chances are you will be greeted by Cabernet and Merlot, two friendly cockapoo dogs who accompany the Keiters to work every day. Regular customers have come to expect the wagging tails and happy-go-lucky attitudes of the two pooches, who have become quite popular. The dogs are important members of the Keiter clan and serve as a reminder that DAK is a family establishment. Upon entering the second door, visitors will find themselves faced with rows upon rows of various building supplies. Everything from screws to power tools can be found at DAK Tool and Supply. This business has a wide selection of products in stock and can also special-order items upon request.

“We have anything and everything,” explained Cathy. “If we don’t have it, we generally can get it within a week.”

DAK Tool and Supply aims to keep their prices as low as possible, competing with chain organizations and online giants. DAK is the main supplier of automotive supplies to many northeast Ohio car dealerships. Walk-ins are also common for DAK Tool and Supply, which sees many locals visit the shop for personal projects. Cathy stated, “We have great customers, we really do.” Cathy encourages Mentor residents to “shop small,” noting that the local community helps businesses like hers to stay afloat.

“Shop small. That’s what keeps us here,” she adds.

The City of Mentor thanks DAK Tool and Supply for their investment in our community and wishes them continued success. For business hours and additional information, visit their website.
