As of January 1, 2018, tree contractors are required to be registered in order to perform work in the City of Mentor. An ordinance was adopted to protect Mentor property owners should an accident occur.

Tree contractors are required to provide proof of liability insurance with a minimum coverage of $500,000 for bodily injury and $250,000 for property damage. The City is also to be listed on the insurance certificate, so that we are notified by the insurer should there be a lapse in coverage.

The ordinance does not apply to homeowners who are performing work by themselves or with the assistance of others who are not being compensated for their assistance.

For additional information, or to verify if a contractor is registered, please contact the City of Mentor Engineering & Building Department at (440) 974-5785 or building@cityofmentor.com.
