The City of Mentor’s Learn to Swim program offers a fun, progressive approach to building water safety and swimming skills for children of all ages. Based on American Red Cross-style instruction, our classes help kids develop confidence, independence, and essential aquatic abilities in a safe, supportive environment.
Classes are held at Morton Public Pool and are open to children of all ages and skill levels.
Parent & Child classes introduce the youngest swimmers to the water through games, songs, and gentle guidance. Children learn safe entry and exit, bobbing, bubble blowing, assisted gliding, and what to expect with adult supervision.
“Look at me, I’m 3” classes are for 3-year olds that are ready for the next step past Parent&Child level. Children learn safe entry and exit, floating, bobbing, bubble blowing, and how to move in the water on their front and back with instructor support. This is done through games, songs, and gentle guidance.
Preschool classes help children build independence away from their parents. Kids learn to follow instructions, submerge fully, bob, blow bubbles, and float with support.
Levels 1–5 progress step by step, teaching breath control, floating, gliding, object retrieval, and foundational strokes such as front crawl, backstroke, and elementary backstroke. As children advance, they master rotary breathing, survival swimming, and treading water. On the first day, instructors assess each child and place them in the most appropriate level for steady progress.
Private lessons are perfect for teen and adult swimmers interested in developing stronger skills or overcoming a fear of water and for Learn-to-Swim students who need a little additional help. These are scheduled upon request, please reach out to Morton pool management for more details.
