Mentor Community Recreation Center

Renovations at the new Mentor Community Recreation Center are moving along and we look forward to opening later this year. Residents are excited to take advantage of the new facility and we have received a number of questions. Here are some answers to those that are most frequently asked.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

When will the new Recreation Center open?  
Construction and renovation efforts are moving along smoothly, and we are waiting for equipment and supplies to come in.  We are doing our best to open by the beginning of November.

Is the pool going to be closed?  
The pool will most certainly be open. We plan to schedule numerous programs as well as provide many opportunities for open swim times for our members.

Will there be new equipment?
Yes, we are replacing approximately 65% of the equipment in the facility.  The new fitness center will have state-of-the-art equipment to meet everyone’s needs.

What will the operating hours?
The current proposed hours are:

Monday – Friday             5:30 AM – 10:00 PM
Saturday                          7:00 AM – 9:00 PM
Sunday                             8:00 AM – 6:00 PM

Hours may vary throughout the year, including holidays. Proposed hours subject to change.

How much will memberships cost?
The Mentor Community Recreation Center proposed annual membership rate structure is as follows. This is subject to change.

A resident is defined as a person who lives within Mentor City limits.

If I live in Mentor-on-the-Lake and have the same area code, and my kids go to Mentor high school, am I considered a resident?
Mentor-on-the-Lake residents are not residents of the City of Mentor. The address of each participant is cross referenced with the county to determine actual residency.

Will monthly memberships be available?
No, we will be offering only annual memberships and daily passes.

Will there be a daily admission rate?
Single-day admission to the facility will be available for those who do not wish to purchase an annual membership. Residents: $10.00.  Non-residents: $12.00

Will an “unlimited” pass be available?
Yes, an “unlimited” plan will be available for several activities. The unlimited pass will be structured as an annual membership add-on option.

When can I sign up for a membership?
A membership drive will be announced closer to the opening date.  Please follow the City of Mentor website / Facebook page for details.

If I live outside of Mentor, can I join?
Yes, non-residents are welcome.

Do I need to be a member to take a class or program?
No, you do not need to be a member to participate in the programs and activities offered at the recreation center. Both members and non-members can participate; however, members will receive priority registration and discounted pricing for all programs.

How old do you have to be to be considered a senior?
You would need to be 60 years old to be considered a senior at the Recreation Center

Can I use my daughter’s or son’s address to be considered a resident?
Residency status is based on the residency of the individual purchasing the membership. Only a physical address (not a PO Box) along with a current utility bill will determine a resident membership.

Is there going to be a senior plan like silver sneakers or renew active offered at the Recreation Center?
Yes, we will be offering Renew Active at the Mentor Community Recreation Center for who qualify through their insurance company (United Health Care).  Please check with your provider to see if you qualify.  We currently offer the Silver Sneakers program at the Mentor Senior Center and will continue to offer that option at that specific location. Silver Sneakers will not be a membership option at the Mentor Community Recreation Center.

How many tennis courts will there be?
4 tennis courts will be available for use. Prior to closing, the facility had 6 tennis courts.  2 of those courts will be converted into multi-function space for basketball, volleyball, and other activities.

Is pickleball going away? 
We plan to keep and utilize all the pickleball courts currently at the facility. We are and have been in communication with the key people who ran the pickleball leagues previously at Heisley, and hope to structure leagues, clinics and open playing times in a way that is beneficial for members, residents, and the City.

Will the outdoor pool be open next summer?  
Yes, we fully anticipate opening the outdoor pool next summer.

How many basketball courts will be available?
We will have 2 basketball courts available in the Recreation Center.

Can I apply for a part time job at the Recreation Center?
We will be hiring for part time positions for the rec center as we get closer to the opening.  Please refer to the City of Mentor website for further details.

Will any of the previous instructors coming back?
We expect many of the past instructors to return.  We will be offering many more programs and will have more instructors to sustain our offerings.

When will all the programs start?
Some programs will be available upon the opening of the facility. A full schedule will be instituted in January 2023.

Are you selling the old equipment?
Yes, a city auction is scheduled for August 27th.  Pictures of equipment to be actioned can be viewed on the City of Mentor website beginning Monday, August 22. An equipment preview will be held on Saturday, August 27th from 8:00 – 10:00 AM with the auction starting promptly at 10:00 AM.
