Mentor Fire Hydrant Testing

The Mentor Fire Department will be performing its annual hydrant flushing program throughout the month of June. This important maintenance activity helps ensure the reliability of the city’s water supply for fire protection and maintains overall water quality.

Hydrant flushing removes sediment and mineral deposits that can accumulate in water mains over time. This proactive measure:

  • Improves water quality
  • Ensures fire protection readiness
  • Supports a reliable water system

During the flushing process, residents may experience temporary discolored water, reduced water pressure, or cloudy water in their homes or businesses. These conditions are normal and typically resolve quickly.

If You Experience Discolored Water:

  • Run cold water only — Turn on your cold water taps for several minutes until the water runs clear.
  • Avoid using hot water — Do not use hot water during this time, as sediment can enter and damage your water heater.
  • Check before using — Once the water runs clear, check again before drinking, cooking, or washing.
  • Use caution with laundry — Discolored water can stain clothing. Wait until the water is clear before doing laundry.

The Mentor Fire Department appreciates the community’s patience and understanding as they work to keep Mentor’s water system safe and reliable.
