Mentor Police Chief Mike Majernik

The City of Mentor has named Captain Mike Majernik as its next police chief.

Captain Majernik has been with the Mentor Police Department for 29 years, serving as a Patrolman for eight years, a Sergeant for seven years, five years as a lieutenant, and was promoted to his present position of Captain in 2019.

He has a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminology from The Ohio State University, a Graduate Certificate for Criminal Justice Education from the University of Virginia, is a graduate of the prestigious FBI National Academy, and has certifications in specialized areas of law enforcement too numerous to mention.

“I am confident that his vision, leadership style, and ethical standards coincide with the vision and standards of the Mentor Police Department, the administration, City Council and our residents,” says Mentor City Manager Kenneth J. Filipiak.

Current chief Ken Gunsch will officially retire on October 31, 2026, after 33 years of service with the department. Captain Majernik will serve in an acting capacity as Police Chief beginning October 10, 2026, and officially on November 1, 2026.
