Lifeguard at Mentor Civic Center Pool

New guards can earn up to $14.00 per hour based on availability.

Summer is quickly approaching, and the City of Mentor has an immediate need to fill lifeguard positions at Mentor pools.

Many residents are aware that Garfield Pool was closed last season due to staffing shortages. In addition to that closure, some water features at Mentor Civic Center Pool were closed, and Morton Pool was forced to close on several occasions throughout the summer as the state-mandated minimum number of lifeguards could not be met.

We face these same staffing challenges today…and we’re not the only ones. Communities across the region are facing the same problem.

We’re looking for candidates to join our dedicated team of lifeguards at Mentor pools. In addition to helping serve others in our community, you’ll get to work outdoors, forge new friendships, and have the opportunity to develop valuable leadership skills.

We depend on our lifeguards to help protect our swimmers, enforce rules, help with upkeep of the facility, and to participle in ongoing training. Candidates must have a commitment to action, leadership, and service, while ensuring the health and safety of patrons. Applicants must be strong swimmers and possess a valid American Red Cross (or similar) Lifeguarding Training Certification which includes CPR for Professional Rescuers Certification & First Aid.

Starting pay for new lifeguards is $12.00 per hour with a bonus increase of $2.00 per hour based on the ability to work additional hours. Returning guards are compensated for their previous years of work and can make up to $14.00 per hour with the same $2.00 bonus based on availability. The position requires a minimum commitment of 25 hours per week including afternoon, evening, and weekend hours, from May through August.

The City of Mentor is partnering with University Hospitals – LiveHealthy Fitness Center to offer American Red Cross Lifeguarding classes for those who require lifeguard training or recertification. Fees for these classes will be reimbursed for those who work as a lifeguard at a Mentor pool this summer.  Students must be 15 years of age, attend all classes, and pass the written & physical tests to become certified. Classes begin May 6, 2022.  Recertification classes will be offered on April 22 and May 6.
