One of the services provided by the Mentor Police Department consists of officers patrolling on an all terrain vehicle. The City of Mentor has many parks, beaches, and undeveloped land which are inaccessible to traditional methods of police patrol. Even police bicycles, used with great success by the patrol division, are ineffective in some of these areas.
The primary focus of the unit is patrol of the Mentor Lagoons Nature Preserve. This area has a system of trails accessed by numerous citizens, and a patrol presence was desired in the area. The vast Mentor Lagoons Marina also is a focus of the patrol activities for the unit. Other uses include patrol of beach front property throughout the City, the railroad rights of way, other city parks, and at special events.
