The Mentor Police Department wants to remind everyone to drive safely and sober this holiday weekend. Our officers will be on patrol and on the lookout for impaired motorists as well as unsafe operation including speeding and distracted driving.
And it’s not just us. Neighboring municipalities, as well as the Ohio State Highway Patrol, and the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, will be out in full force patrolling streets and highways to keep motorists and passengers safe.
According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, there were 12 fatal crashes last New Year’s holiday period. Of those, alcohol and/or drugs were a factor in six fatal crashes, while speed played a role in two of the crashes. Of the eight fatalities in which seat belts were available, five were unbelted. There were also four pedestrians killed during the holiday period.
We want everyone to have a good time, but more importantly, we want everyone to make it home safely from your New Year’s celebrations.
- Drive safely and observe the posted speed limit
- Be sure that you and all of your passengers are buckled up while driving
- Don’t text and drive
- If you are going to drink, make sure someone else is driving
Remember, traffic safety starts with you. An accident is the wrong way to ring in the New Year.
