Installing a car seat can be tricky – especially if you’re a new parent or a grandparent tasked with transporting the grandkids. Take the guess work out of installation and make sure that your most precious cargo will be riding safe and secure in a properly installed car seat.
The Mentor Police Department offers Child Passenger Safety Seat installations and inspections by certified technicians. The services are offered by appointment only and can be scheduled Monday through Friday, during the hours between 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM.
Schedule your appointment by calling the Mentor Police Department’s Tracey Woodward, Crime Prevention Specialist and Certified Car Seat Technician, at 440-974-5760, extension 4017. She will discuss and demonstrate proper harnessing and installation techniques, and make sure you know how to install the child safety seat correctly in your vehicle. This is a free service.
Residents needing help with their child safety seat, but unable to schedule an appointment at the times offered by the Mentor Police Department, should call for assistance in finding another technician or checkpoint.
Ohio’s child passenger safety law requires:
- Children less than 4 years old or 40 pounds must use a child safety seat meeting federal motor vehicle safety standards.
- Children less than 8 years old, unless they are at least 4 feet, 9 inches tall must use a booster seat.
- Children ages 8-15 must use a child safety seat or safety belt.
Although this is the law, it is best practice to keep your child rear facing until they are 2 and always keep them in a child safety seat until they reach the height or weight limit of that seat. They are ALWAYS safer in a child safety seat.
