The Chief of Police is responsible for professional and administrative work in planning, organizing, and directing all activities of the Mentor Police Department.  The Chief works directly under the administrative direction of the City Manager / Safety Director, and along with the other city department heads, is intimately involved in the operation of the City of Mentor. The administrative offices are staffed during business hours.  Staff members are an integral part of the administration of the police department, and handle myriad duties that make a major contribution to the smooth functioning of the department.  Many of their duties require a level of confidentiality of the highest caliber.  The Administrative Captain oversees the many duties carried out by these employees.  In addition, this Captain oversees the department’s hiring and promoting activities, police fleet, and range program. Programs under administration include:

The sworn officers of the Mentor Police Department include the Chief of Police, three Captains, who command the three divisions which make up the department, four Lieutenants, nine Sergeants, and 51 basic Patrol Officers. Along with patrol officers, the department maintains eight detectives, two crime prevention officers, one school resource officer, and one court liaison officer. The department also includes one sworn part-time officer. Civilian personnel include six corrections officers, 15 communications technicians, five records personnel, two property/evidence technicians, a victim’s assistance advocate, a research and training clerk, one part-time city prosecutor with three office personnel, two secretary’s, and eight school crossing guards. [more]

The Support Services Division is responsible for the Communications Unit, Corrections, the Records Unit, Property and Evidence, Radios, and the Police Department building conditions.

Support services encompass many units of the department consisting primarily of civilian employees but providing integral support to the mission of the Police Department. Without any of these components in place, the Mentor Police Department would cease to function in the efficient manner for which it has come to known.
