FYI

Summer is here and with the change of season come questions on some common topics.

Mosquito Spraying
The Lake County General Health District (LCGHD) sprays most of the municipalities in Lake County to reduce the risk of mosquito borne diseases and to provide for a more comfortable summer environment. For up-to-date information on spraying, contact the Health District Spray Schedule Hotline, 24 hours per day at 440-350-2088 or visit lcghd.org.

Open Burning
Burning yard waste is not permitted in the City. Small outdoor firepits/outdoor fireplaces are allowed but must not be used on an apartment balcony or within 10’ of any structure. Recreational fires having a fuel area of 3’ or less in diameter and 2’ or less in height are permitted. No permit is required. Planning a bonfire (a fuel area of 3’ or more in diameter)? You need a permit. To receive a bonfire permit, call the Fire Prevention Bureau at 440-974-5768 at least two business days before your planned bonfire.

Grass and Weed Control
Lawns and landscaping should be maintained so as not to cause a negative effect on the neighborhood. Generally, grass in residential neighborhoods must be controlled in height or growth (under 8”). Property owners with excessively high grass or weeds will be given notice by Mentor’s Code Enforcement Office and have 48 hours from receipt of notice to cut the high grass or remove the weeds. If the notices are ignored, legal action will be pursued for City crews to cut the grass at the owner’s expense. Call 440 -974-5740 with questions.

Power Outages
Report all outages DIRECTLY to FirstEnergy at 888-544-4877. You may also report power outages online and even via text. To find out more information visit the FirstEnergy 24/7 Power Center. Please do not call 9-1-1 unless you have an emergency.

Garage Sales
A permit is not required for a garage sale, but the city does restrict where signs can be placed. Garage sale signs are permitted only on the property where the sale is being held. They may not be posted at the street corner, on tree lawns, or utility poles. Illegally posted signs may be confiscated by city staff without prior notice.

Tree Lawn Trees
Property owners are required to maintain trees in tree lawn area (right of way). Trees must be trimmed so that pedestrians and motorists can pass without obstruction. Branches that hang over the sidewalk should be kept at seven feet about the sidewalk, and 14 feet above the roadway. Branches also should not interfere with visibility of street or traffic signs.
