The Mentor Fire Department is hiring a fulltime firefighter/paramedic. The City of Mentor Civil Service Commission is now accepting applications for a written exam to be conducted on November 18, 2021.
“We’re looking for the best. We’re looking for someone who is bright but most of all has a passion for taking care of people,” says Mentor Fire Chief Bob Searles.
This position offers excellent pay, with an annual salary range of $61,651.72 to $86,481.98, as well as full healthcare and retirement benefits.
As a large department, Mentor Fire offers candidates enhanced opportunities for professional advancement as well specialty training for their Technical Rescue, Hazardous Materials, and Water Rescue teams. Mentor firefighters also typically have access to more equipment as well as newer equipment compared to many departments in Ohio.

According to Bloomberg, firefighters have the highest level of job satisfaction in the country. The satisfaction gained from helping those in need is what attracts most firefighters to the job in the first place.
“When I go into a house and someone is having their worst day, there is nothing more rewarding than being there to take the emergency out of the situation, calm them down, and do what I can to help them,” says Mentor Firefighter/Paramedic Kevin Butsko.
And, the sense of comradery and mutual support is what keeps them there.
“We spend a lot of time together. It’s a family atmosphere here,” adds Mentor Lieutenant/Paramedic Chad Lee, “We take care of each other.
Despite the benefits of this fulfilling and challenging career, applications are on the decline and fire departments across the nation are facing a staffing crunch.
“Five years ago, it was typical to receive 150 applications for a new position in a Lake County department. Recently, one neighboring community only had 8 applications,” says Mentor Lieutenant/Paramedic Brian Bittner.
Applicants must be a U.S. Citizen, or in the process of becoming a citizen, at least 20-years old at time of application and 21-years old at time of appointment. No person is eligible to receive an original appointment on or after the person’s 36th birthday per City Ordinance MCO 159. Must have a valid Driver’s License, must be a High School Graduate (or GED equivalent), and must be a Certified Paramedic or currently enrolled in paramedic school; must be a Certified Paramedic at time of appointment.
