For job seekers, the market is as attractive as its been in decades. Due to low unemployment and other factors, organizations from coast-to-coast are hustling to fill positions. Municipalities are not immune. The City of Mentor currently has dozens of positions throughout the city that they are eager to fill.
Filling seasonal jobs is a necessity right now with summer camps and activities looming just around the corner – especially the hiring of lifeguards.
“One of the most critical needs we have right now is filling lifeguard positions at our three municipal pools,” says Parks & Recreation Director, Kenn Kaminski, “The State of Ohio mandates a minimum number of lifeguards on staff when pools are in use, and that calculation is based on water surface area. If staffing requirements are not met, then one or more of our pools will probably remain closed throughout the season and limited hours may be imposed on the facilities that we can open. We desperately need lifeguards.”
Mentor isn’t the only community facing this challenge. Municipalities across the region are struggling to find help this summer.
“We’re not just competing with other aquatic facilities, we’re competing with the job market in general,” says Recreation Superintendent, Nita Justice, “Mentor is currently offering one of the best pay rates for municipal pools in Northeast Ohio to try and attract lifeguards this swim season.”
The starting pay rate for new lifeguards in Mentor has increased to $13.00 per hour – up $1.25 from last year – and the city is offering an additional $2.00 per hour bonus rate based on availability. Returning lifeguards have the opportunity to make up to $16.00 per hour (including that same hourly bonus incentive) based on how long they’ve worked for the city.
The position requires a minimum commitment of 25 hours per week including afternoon, evening, and weekend hours, from May through August. Applicants must be age 15 or older, strong swimmers, and possess a valid American Red Cross (or similar) Lifeguarding Certification which includes CPR for Professional Rescuer & First Aid Certification.
The City of Mentor is offering American Red Cross Lifeguarding classes for those who require lifeguard training or recertification at the new Mentor Community Recreation Center. Fees for these classes will be reimbursed for those who work as a lifeguard at a Mentor pool through the season.
Lifeguard classes will be offered May 12- 14 and 26-28. Additional outdoor Lifeguard training classes will be held at Civic Center Pool in June.
