The Cleveland Museum of Natural History has received a grant from Sustain our Great Lakes to manage the phragmites which have choked out native species in Mentor Marsh over the past 50 years.
The program will consists of spraying and cutting in the coming weeks. A ground team is scheduled to start spraying the perimeter on foot the week of September 14th. A helicopter will be deployed on September 21st to spray the interior of the marsh.
A “Marsh Masher” will then be brought in sometime in October to cut down the phragmites stalks in an effort to provide native species which exist in the seed bed to re-emerge.
This is an important first step in the long term restoration of the Mentor Marsh.
If you have any questions regarding this effort, please refer to flyer which is being distributed to residents who encircle the Marsh or contact the Cleveland Museum of Natural History.
