Mentor City Officials, along with representatives from the Lake County Board of Developmental Disabilities/Deepwood, and other guests were on hand to officially open the new all-inclusive playground at Mentor Civic Center Park.
The $140,000 project was approved by City Council in April, and was partially funded through a $90,000 NatureWorks grant from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. The playground was designed and constructed by Snider Recreation, Inc.
Mentor City Manager, Kenneth J. Filipiak, recognized those in attendance and thanked everyone who took part in ensuring this project became a reality.
“This all-inclusive playground [demonstrates] what is best about our community,” said Filipiak, “Mentor finds ways to allow our residents to enjoy the same level of opportunity and experiences as all other fellow residents.”
Mentor City Council President, Bruce Landeg, highlighted the importance of accessibility and inclusiveness.
“All children should have the same opportunity to encounter and grow during active play regardless of their age, gender, ability, or differences,” said Landeg, “As they play, children set aside their differences and focus on their similarities – a lesson that many adults could certainly use today.”
Elfie Roman, Superintendent of the Lake County Board of Development Disabilities commented on the spirit of collaboration that exists with the LCBDD and the City.
“Mentor has been the heart of our program with the Lake County Board of Development Disabilities and has also established – more than 50 years ago – Mentor’s reputation as one of the most progressive communities…that embraces inclusion and strives to enhance the quality of life for all of its residents regardless of their age or ability,” said Roman.
Mentor Civic Center Park is located at 8600 Munson Road.
