Lake Erie Shore at Mentor Lagoons Nature Preserve

It may surprise you to learn that everyday activities around your home can contribute to pollution and harmful algae growth in Lake Erie. Fertilizers, pesticides, yard waste, wastewater, and pet waste contain phosphorus and nitrogen, nutrients that fuel algae blooms. When these pollutants are left on the ground, rainwater washes them into storm sewers, which flow directly to Lake Erie without treatment. Excessive nutrients and pollutants from lawns and gardens can contaminate the lake, harming fish and other aquatic life.

To help protect our waterways and Lake Erie, follow these tips when working in your yard this summer:

  • Use only the necessary amount of fertilizers and pesticides, and apply them when rain isn’t forecast.
  • Sweep up any excess from driveways or sidewalks.
  • Properly dispose of or compost yard waste. Never dump it in storm drains, ditches, or streams.
  • Ensure all household wastewater flows to your septic system or sanitary sewer. Never dump wastewater into waterways or storm drains.
  • Pick up after your pets and dispose of their waste properly.
