Corduroy Road on a Snowy Day

Most of the city of Mentor received approximately 9” of snow from this weekend’s storm with some additional snowfall continuing today. An average of 17-20 city plow vehicles have been in service 24/7 at any given time since overnight Saturday to keep Mentor roadways passable. Thanks to everyone for making way for our crews so they can safely do their job.

As with any snow event, crews have been assigned to maintain main roads (such as Center Street, Mentor Avenue and Heisley Road), secondary routes (such as Adkins, North Palmerston and Garden Lane), side streets, and cul-de-sacs, generally in that order.

Crews have been challenged with blowing and drifting snow as well as frigid temperatures which render rock salt ineffective. They have been successful in keeping up with the snowfall with a combination of plowing and usage of cold-weather brine solution. Roadways will be salted and final cleanup will be conducted as conditions allow.

It is the city’s priority to remove snow from the roadway. As always, cul-de-sacs have presented a particular challenge as there is limited frontage for snow to be deposited.

Residents are reminded that clearing snow and ice from sidewalks and driveway aprons is the responsibility of the property owner. It is a violation of City ordinance to shovel or blow snow into the roadway. The city will, as a courtesy, clear snow and ice from the main commercial district of Mentor Avenue as time, personnel, and resources allow.

If you have a fire hydrant on your property, please clear it of snow or ice so that it can be easily seen and accessed in the event of an emergency. Seconds matter.

Finally, if your mailbox has been damaged by a city snowplow, you may contact the Public Works Department at (440) 974-5780 or [email protected] for replacement options.

We thank everyone for their continued patience and cooperation as we continue our snow removal efforts.
