Happy 60th birthday, Mentor!

Mentor was first settled in 1797 by Charles Parker, a member of Moses Cleaveland’s survey team. It became a township in 1815 and the township center became Mentor Village in 1855. Mentor officially became a city on December 18, 1963. We’ve come a long way since then. Here are some key events from that year.

  • The US & Cuba officially severed diplomatic relations.
  • John F. Kennedy was assassinated.
  • Hurricane Flora stormed through the Caribbean.
  • Alcatraz federal penitentiary closed.
  • Russia’s Valentina Tereshkova became the first woman in space.
  • ZIP codes were introduced
  • Beatles released “I Want to Hold Your Hand”.
  • Martin Luther King, Jr. delivers his “I have a dream” speech.
  • The first touch-tone telephone introduced by AT&T.
  • “Oh I wish I was an Oscar Meyer wiener” jingle debuted.
  • First successful lung transplant performed by Dr. James Hardy.
  • The Cleveland Browns finished 10-4.
  • Cleopatra was the biggest draw at the box office,
    grossing $57 million
