With heavy rain in the forecast this weekend, we wanted to share some tips with our residents in the event of localized flooding.

Make sure you have everything you need on hand in case there is a power outage including food, water, spare batteries and adequate fuel.

If your home is equipped with a sump pump, make sure that it is in good working order. If your basement does flood, avoid walking in standing water unless you are absolutely certain that the water has not come into contact with electrical outlets or devices.

Please ensure storm drains are clear of debris to help move the water. If debris begins to accumulate, please remove leaves or twigs to help keep the water flowing. If the backup is significant – do not put yourself at risk. Instead, advise the City.

Stay away from fast moving water. As little as 6” of fast moving water can knock you off your feet.

Keep children out of the water. Although a flooded street is a curiosity and looks fun, they can become trapped by the powerful suction that can be created by a storm drain or get sick from playing in contaminated water.

If you are driving and come upon a flooded section of road, turn around immediately. The water can be much deeper than it looks. If you are caught on a flooded road and waters are rising rapidly around you, get out of the car as quickly as you can and move to higher ground.

Finally, in the event of significant flooding, we will be on hand to keep everyone up to date with further information and instructions through the following means:
