The Mentor Fire Department is Now Hiring

The City of Mentor Civil Service Commission is accepting applications for a Written Exam to establish an Eligibility List for original appointment for the position of full-time Firefighter/Paramedic. Annual salary range is $80,371.86 to $101,468.22.  Must be a U.S. Citizen, or in the process of becoming a citizen, at least 20-years old at time of application and 21-years old at time of appointment. No person is eligible to receive an original appointment on or after the person’s 36th birthday per City Ordinance MCO 159. Must have a valid Driver’s License, must be a High School Graduate (or GED equivalent), and must be a Certified Paramedic or currently enrolled in paramedic school; must be a Certified Paramedic at time of appointment. A copy of a Paramedic Certification or class enrollment must be submitted with the application.

Extra credit points will be given for the following:

  1. Proof of successful completion of Ohio Full-Time Firefighter Recruit Training Program/Firefighter II will earn two (2) additional points to passing score (70%) on the written exam; a copy of proof must be submitted with application.
  2. Veteran applicants with proof of Honorable Discharge (DD214 Long Form with signatures, Member 4 Copy), or of current active-duty service in “Good Standing”, with a letter of “Good Standing” from a Commanding Officer, will be awarded two (2) additional points to passing score (70%) on the written exam. A copy of proof of military service must be received by the Civil Service Recording Secretary by the last day of filing
  3. Active Mentor Part-Time Firefighters who have completed their probationary period will be awarded additional credit points to passing score (70%) in accordance with Mentor’s Civil Service Code.

To be processed for possible appointment, you must have a valid/current (not more than 12-months old) Auburn Career Center or Tri-C Physical Agility Certificate (obtained at candidate’s own expense); this certificate is NOT required to take the Written Exam.

The Written Exam will be given on Monday, October 19, 2026 at 6:00 p.m. at the Mentor Senior Center, 8484 Munson Road, Mentor. Sign-in starts at 5:30 p.m. A valid picture I.D. is required at sign-in.

A non-refundable filing fee of $20 Cash or Money Order is required at time of application – No Checks, Credit or Debit Cards accepted. SEE FACT SHEET IN THE APPLICATION PACKET FOR DETAILS. Advance application packets are available at the link below to print but will not be accepted until September 21, 2026.  Ranking for ties is determined by date and time of application submission.  Applications will also be available and accepted in-person Monday, September 21st through Friday, October 9th, Weekdays Only, from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm at the City of Mentor Civil Service Commission, Mentor Municipal Center, 3rd Floor, 8500 Civic Center Boulevard, Mentor, Ohio.
